My Answer:
Probably because most Christians are not Christ-like. I'm not saying they aren't saved, or "just as in need of grace as the next person". I don't think anyone would prefer a holier-than-thou over a hypocrite... but I do think most people (Ghandi included) expect Christians to act like the guy they claim to follow... forgiving, welcoming, expecting something better from people. And I don't mean to secularize Christ, he was certainly much more than those few things... but those are the things Christian can imitate.
